How to Generate a Strong Password on iPhone

Use Apple’s built-in password suggestion, create a credential in the Passwords app, or generate one privately in your browser.

Fastest method

  1. Open the account signup page in Safari or a supported app.
  2. Tap the new-password field.
  3. Tap Use Strong Password when iPhone offers it.
  4. Save the credential when prompted so AutoFill can use it later.

Method 1: Accept the suggested strong password

For supported signup forms, iPhone can create a unique password and save it without requiring you to memorize or retype it.

  1. Open the website or app and begin creating a new account. Enter the account name or email address.
  2. Tap the password field. When iPhone displays a suggested credential, tap Use Strong Password.
  3. If the site rejects the format, tap Other Options. Apple currently offers alternatives such as No Special Characters and Easy to Type.
  4. Finish creating the account and confirm that the password is saved when iPhone asks.
If a confirmation field is not filled: Apple’s current instructions say you can choose Other Options, then Copy Strong Password, and paste it into the confirmation field.

Method 2: Create a password in the Passwords app

You can generate a credential before visiting the signup page. This is useful when a site’s form does not trigger an automatic suggestion.

  1. Open the Passwords app and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode.
  2. Tap All, then tap the new-password button.
  3. Enter the website or app and the user name for the account.
  4. Tap the password field. iPhone suggests a strong password; select it, then tap Save.

Method 3: Use a browser password generator

When Apple does not offer a suggestion—or when you need to meet an unusual length or character rule—use the Generate My Password tool. It creates the result locally in the browser with the Web Crypto API.

  1. Open the generator and choose the length and character types accepted by the account.
  2. Generate a new value and copy it only when the password field is ready.
  3. Paste it into the site, then save the credential in the Passwords app or your chosen password manager.
  4. Clear the clipboard if you copied the password to another app, and do not reuse it for any other account.
Prefer the built-in flow when it works. Generating and saving in one step reduces clipboard use and avoids losing a credential before it reaches your password manager.

Turn on Password AutoFill

Apple’s current path is Settings → General → AutoFill & Passwords. Turn on AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys, then select the password app or apps you want iPhone to use. Menu labels can change between iOS releases.

If “Use Strong Password” does not appear

  • Check that AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys is enabled.
  • Tap the password field again and look for the password button near the keyboard.
  • Try Safari if the signup form inside an app does not support password generation.
  • Use the Passwords app or this site’s generator, then save the result manually.

Use a passkey when the account supports one

A passkey lets you sign in with Face ID or Touch ID without managing a password for that account. If a trusted service offers a passkey during signup or security settings, it can be a simpler alternative to generating another password.
