Apple ID password requirements at a glance

Apple ID is now called Apple Account. The name changed, but you still use the same email address or phone number and password to sign in.

Bottom line: eight characters is only the acceptance floor. A unique, randomly generated 16- or 20-character password that includes both letter cases and numbers is substantially stronger.

Apple ID versus Apple Account

Apple renamed Apple ID to Apple Account. Searches, older instructions, and some familiar wording still use Apple ID, while current Apple support pages use Apple Account. They refer to the same account credential.

Your Apple Account signs you in to services including iCloud, the App Store, Apple Music, iMessage, and FaceTime. A password created for that account should not be reused on any other website.

Does an Apple ID password need a special character?

Apple's published minimum rules require eight or more characters, uppercase and lowercase letters, and at least one number. The listed minimum does not say a punctuation symbol is mandatory. Apple nevertheless encourages adding extra characters and punctuation to make the password stronger.

Using one or more symbols is a sensible default when generating a new password. If the live Apple form gives a more specific message, follow the form because Apple may update validation behavior.

What is a valid Apple ID password example?

A valid format can look like a random mixture such as G7!mQ2#vL9@rT4$x. This is a public illustration, not a password to copy. Generate a fresh value so nobody else has seen it.

A weak example such as Apple123 may contain both cases and a number, but it is short, predictable, and built from a brand word. Meeting visible composition rules does not automatically make a password safe.

Use an Apple ID password generator

Open the 16-character password generator or 20-character generator.
Keep uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols enabled.
Generate a fresh candidate rather than adapting an old Apple or email password.
Enter it directly on Apple's official password form and follow any live message.
Save the accepted password in a trusted password manager.

Why might Apple reject a new password?

Apple may reject a candidate that is shorter than eight characters, lacks one of the required letter cases, has no number, contains three identical characters in a row, or is considered commonly used. A previously used or overly familiar password may also fail security checks.

Generate a completely new candidate instead of making small changes such as appending a number. If punctuation triggers a specific compatibility message, try the alphanumeric password generator while retaining both letter cases and numbers.

How to change an Apple Account password

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, choose Sign-In & Security, and select Change Password. Apple says a trusted device already signed in with two-factor authentication is the easiest and most secure route. On Mac, use System Settings, your name, Sign-In & Security, then Change Password.

You can also sign in at the Apple Account website and choose Password under Sign-In and Security. Apple may redirect you to a trusted device when one is available.

If you forgot your Apple Account password

Apple recommends resetting the password from a trusted Apple device that is already signed in. Without one, use the Apple Support app on a borrowed device or visit iforgot.apple.com.

If the normal reset options do not work, account recovery can restore access after a waiting period. Apple says Support cannot shorten that security delay.

Protect the account beyond its password

Turn on two-factor authentication, maintain access to trusted phone numbers and devices, and consider adding an account recovery contact. Apple also recommends never sharing the password, verification codes, recovery key, or other account-security details.
