Fastest Android method
- Sign in to Chrome on the Android device.
- Open a website and start creating an account.
- Tap the password field, then tap Suggest strong password.
- If it is missing, tap the Passwords button above the keyboard, then Suggest strong password.
- Tap Use password and finish signup.
Step 1: Select the autofill provider you intend to use
Chrome on Android can use Google Password Manager or another installed autofill service. That choice determines which provider supplies and saves passwords inside Chrome.
- Open Chrome and tap More, then Settings.
- Tap Autofill services.
- Select Autofill with Google to use Google Password Manager, or choose the other service you trust.
- Tap Restart Chrome to apply the change.
Step 2: Turn on password saving
- In Chrome, tap More → Settings → Google Password Manager.
- At the bottom right, tap Settings.
- Turn on Offer to save passwords.
Google says password saving is enabled by default. A managed work or school profile may restrict the setting.
Step 3: Generate a suggested password in Chrome
- Sign in to Chrome with the Google Account where you want the credential stored.
- Open the website's signup form and enter the requested username or email.
- Tap the new-password field, then tap Suggest strong password.
- If the suggestion is not visible, tap the Passwords button above the keyboard, then tap Suggest strong password.
- Review the preview, tap Use password, and complete signup.
If Android does not suggest a strong password
- Confirm that you are signed in to Chrome and using the intended profile.
- Verify that Offer to save passwords is on.
- Check Chrome's Autofill services setting and restart Chrome after changing it.
- Remove the website from Declined sites and apps in Google Password Manager settings if you previously chose never to save there.
- Update Chrome, reload the signup page, and tap the new-password field again.
- Try the website in Chrome if an app's custom signup screen does not expose a compatible password field.
Generating passwords inside Android apps
Google Password Manager can save and autofill credentials for supported apps as well as websites. The exact generation prompt depends on the app's form, the Android version, and the selected autofill provider. Some apps show a strong-password option above the keyboard; others expose only saved credentials or no compatible prompt.
If an app does not offer generation, create the account through its official website in Chrome when available, or use the standalone password generator and save the result immediately in your chosen manager. Do not assume a password generated for a website was also saved for the app—verify the entry and associated domain.
Use screen lock or biometrics when prompted
Android and Chrome may ask for a fingerprint, face verification, PIN, pattern, or device password before revealing or filling sensitive saved information. Keep a secure screen lock enabled. Google Password Manager on Android uses the device screen lock to control access to saved passwords and passkeys.
Find and verify the saved password
- Open Chrome and tap More → Settings → Google Password Manager.
- Search for the website or app.
- Open the entry and authenticate if requested.
- Confirm the username and website are correct; use Edit if necessary.
You can also install Google's Password Manager app, which Google describes as a shortcut to the same manager. Uninstalling that shortcut does not delete the data stored in the Google Account.
Run Password Checkup on Android
In Chrome, open More → Settings → Google Password Manager → Checkup. Google Password Manager reports saved passwords it identifies as compromised, weak, or reused. Change a compromised password on the original site and keep every generated password unique to one account.
Use a passkey when the service supports one
Google Password Manager can also create and save passkeys for supported apps and sites. A passkey uses the device's screen-lock authentication instead of a reusable password. Follow the service's prompt when offered; keep recovery information current in case the device is lost.
