How to Generate a Secure Password in Firefox

Use Firefox's built-in password suggestion, save the new login, and troubleshoot sites that do not show or accept the generated password.

Fastest Firefox method

  1. Open a website's account-creation form in Firefox.
  2. Click the new-password field.
  3. Select Use a Securely Generated Password.
  4. Complete signup; Firefox saves the new login for that site.
  5. Open Menu → Passwords to verify the saved entry.

Step 1: Confirm Firefox can save passwords

Firefox offers password generation as part of its built-in Password Manager. Make sure saving and autofill are enabled before creating the account.

  1. Open the Firefox menu and select Passwords.
  2. On the about:logins page, open the three-dot menu and select Preferences or Options.
  3. In Passwords and autofill, turn on Ask to save passwords.
  4. Turn on Save and autofill usernames and passwords if you want Firefox to fill the saved login later.

Step 2: Generate the password

  1. Visit the website's signup or account-creation page.
  2. Enter the requested username or email address.
  3. Click inside the new-password field.
  4. Select Use a Securely Generated Password from the suggestion.
  5. Submit the form and finish any account-verification steps.
Firefox saves it: Mozilla's current instructions state that Firefox fills the generated password and saves the new login for that site. Verify the saved entry before closing the signup flow.

If the website rejects Firefox's suggestion

Websites sometimes impose a maximum length or require a particular character pattern. Mozilla documents that clicking the populated password field reveals the generated password so you can edit it to meet the site's rules. Make the smallest required adjustment, keep the final value unique, and confirm that Firefox saved the edited version—not the original suggestion.

For a heavily constrained rule, use the custom password generator, then save the accepted result in Firefox Password Manager.

If “Use a Securely Generated Password” is missing

  • Confirm that the page is an account-creation or password-change form rather than a normal sign-in form.
  • Check that Ask to save passwords is enabled.
  • Open Manage password exceptions and remove the site if it was blocked previously.
  • Leave permanent private browsing mode. Mozilla notes that password-saving settings can be unavailable when Firefox is configured to always use private browsing or never remember history.
  • Update Firefox, reload the page, and click the new-password field again.
  • If the site uses a nonstandard form Firefox cannot detect, generate a compatible value separately and add the login manually in about:logins.

Verify, edit, or remove the saved login

  1. Open the Firefox menu and select Passwords.
  2. Search for the website in about:logins.
  3. Select the entry and confirm the website, username, and saved password.
  4. Use Edit if the accepted password differs from the generated suggestion, or Remove if the entry is wrong.

Windows or macOS may request the operating-system account password before Firefox reveals, copies, or edits a stored password. That prompt is for the device account, not the Mozilla account.

Sync is optional

A Mozilla account is not required to generate and save a password in the local Firefox profile. If you enable Sync for passwords, saved logins can be available in Firefox on your other signed-in devices. Confirm that password syncing is enabled and protect the Mozilla account with a unique password and two-step authentication.

Review breach and reuse warnings

Firefox Password Manager can flag a saved login when the associated site appears in a known breach and can identify reuse of a potentially vulnerable saved password. Mozilla says these comparisons are performed privately without sending saved plaintext passwords. Replace an affected password on the original site with a new unique value.

Use a passkey when the site supports one

Firefox can surface a Use a Passkey option on supported websites. Passkeys use platform authentication rather than a reusable site password. The exact dialog differs on Windows and macOS; follow the operating-system prompt and maintain the account's recovery methods.

Firefox generator versus this site's generator

Firefox is usually the convenient choice for ordinary website signup because it generates, saves, associates, and later autofills the credential. This site's generator is useful when a site requires a specific length or character set, when you want several candidates, or when the credential should be saved in a different manager. This site does not store or autofill the result.
