Why are there 7,776 Diceware words?
Five six-sided dice have 6⁵ possible ordered outcomes: 7,776. A complete five-dice list assigns one word to every outcome, so an independently generated word represents about 12.9 bits of randomness.
How many Diceware words make a passphrase?
Six independently selected words from a 7,776-entry list provide about 77.5 bits. More words increase the search space. The calculation depends on genuinely independent random rolls—not on the apparent complexity or length of the resulting words.
EFF list versus the original Diceware list
This reference uses the EFF long word list, which was designed for memorable passphrases and contains 7,776 distinct entries. The historical original Diceware list also contains 7,776 mappings but includes more abbreviations, very short tokens, names, and punctuation. Equal-sized lists provide the same per-word selection space when used uniformly; their main difference is usability.
