How random are five words?
Each word is chosen independently from the 7,776-entry EFF long word list. Five words have 7,776⁵ possible combinations—more than 28 quintillion combinations, or about 64.6 bits.
Five words versus four words
A fifth independent word multiplies the possible combinations by 7,776. Four words provide about 51.7 bits before any suffix; five words provide about 64.6 bits from the words alone. The extra word creates a longer result but reduces reliance on added digits or symbols.
When should you add digits or a symbol?
Some accounts require a number, symbol, or both. These options use uniform random selection and the entropy display includes their contribution. They are not required for the five-word default to exceed 60 bits.
Do not turn the output into a familiar phrase
The calculation assumes independent random selections. Replacing a word with a name, arranging the words into a sentence, or borrowing a quotation makes the result more predictable. Keep all five generated words unchanged and use the result for only one account.
