Bottom line: use a unique 16- or 20-character random password with uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and conventional ASCII symbols. The live Steam form remains the authority if it displays a more specific requirement.

What are the current Steam password requirements?

Valve's password-change article says the replacement must meet Steam's password strength requirements and cannot be the previous password. It does not list a mandatory number of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, digits, or symbols.

The current English Steam client strings mirrored by SteamTracking include separate validation messages for a password shorter than 8 characters, a password that is not shorter than 64 characters, a weak password, and a password containing the account name. These client messages are useful evidence of what the interface checks, but they are not a substitute for Valve's live form or an official published policy.

How long should a Steam password be?

The mirrored client text indicates a range from 8 through 63 characters. Eight is only the apparent acceptance floor, not a good security target. Use 16–20 random characters when a password manager will store the result. That creates substantially more search space while staying comfortably below the observed upper limit.

A longer memorable option may also work, but the destination form makes the final decision. If Steam rejects a long passphrase, generate a conventional mixed-character password rather than repeatedly shortening a personally meaningful phrase.

Does Steam require uppercase letters, numbers, or symbols?

Steam's public Help Center does not currently publish a fixed composition formula. Do not treat an old forum post or third-party checklist as Valve's current rule. A mixed candidate containing uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and conventional ASCII symbols is a practical compatibility choice because it avoids relying on any one character category.

If a particular symbol is rejected, create a new candidate using common symbols such as !, @, #, $, %, +, or =. Avoid spaces, emoji, and non-ASCII characters unless the live form explicitly accepts them.

What is a strong Steam password example?

A compatible format can look like R7!vQ2#nL9@xT4$m. This is a public illustration, so do not use it as your password. Generate a fresh value that has never appeared on a webpage and does not contain your Steam account name, profile name, email address, game title, or birth date.

Your Steam and email passwords should be different. Valve specifically warns against reusing the Steam account password on the associated email account.

Why is Steam rejecting the password?

Check the exact on-screen message. A candidate may be too short, reach the upper length limit, be judged too weak, contain the account name, or match the previous password. It can also fail because of an unsupported character or a temporary account-recovery problem.

Try a fresh 16- or 20-character result using common ASCII characters.
Remove any account-name fragment or predictable Steam-related word.
Do not reuse the old password or a password from another account.
Confirm you are on an official Steam page before entering credentials.
Use Steam's account recovery flow if the problem persists.

How to change or reset a Steam password

Steam's support flow can search for an account by email address, phone number, or account name. If you still have access, follow the password-change instructions from Steam Support or the client. If you have lost the authenticator, recovery options are available from the same sign-in help flow.

Never send a password or Steam Guard code to anyone claiming to be Steam Support. Valve says its representatives will not ask for either one.

Protect the account with Steam Guard

Steam Guard adds a second layer beyond the account name and password. Valve recommends the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator as its best available account-security level. It can confirm sign-ins through a QR scan, mobile notification, or authenticator code.

Record the recovery code when enabling the authenticator, keep the linked email account secure, and add a current phone number for recovery. A strong password helps, but it does not replace phishing awareness or multifactor protection.
