Discord's official password-change and reset guide says an account password must contain at least 8 characters. The same page notes that additional requirements may apply depending on the user's region.
The live registration, password-change, or reset screen is the final authority for your account. If it presents another rule, follow that current prompt rather than a third-party checklist.
Does Discord require an uppercase letter, number, or symbol?
The current Discord support article does not publish a universal rule requiring a capital letter, number, or special character. Discord's Safety Center recommends a long password containing a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and special characters, but that is security guidance rather than the same thing as a universal acceptance rule.
A mixed random password is still a sensible default. It expands the possible character pool and avoids predictable word-plus-year patterns, provided the live form accepts the selected symbols.
What is a strong Discord password example?
A strong format can look like V7!mQ2#xR9@kL4$p. This is a public illustration, not a password to copy. Generate a fresh result that has never appeared on a webpage.
Do not build a password from your username, server name, birthday, favorite game, pet, or a reused credential. Discord recommends a password used only for the Discord account.

Why might Discord reject a password?
A value may be shorter than the minimum, conflict with an additional regional rule, contain a character rejected by the current form, or be blocked as weak or compromised. Read the exact validation message before changing the format.
- Generate a completely new 16-character candidate.
- If prompted, satisfy the additional rule displayed by Discord.
- Remove spaces, emoji, or unusual Unicode characters if the form rejects them.
- Do not reuse a password from another service.
- Use the reset workflow if you no longer know the current password.
How to change or reset a Discord password
If you know the current password, open User Settings and choose the password option under your account settings. On the login screen, “Forgot your password?” sends reset instructions to the email address attached to the account. Discord Support says it cannot reset the password for you.
If MFA is enabled, Discord may require an MFA code during a password change or reset. Keep backup codes in a safe place separate from the account password.
Use MFA or a passkey
Discord supports multifactor authentication, security keys, and passkeys. A passkey can provide passwordless sign-in on supported devices, while a security key can act as an MFA method. These protections reduce dependence on a password alone.
Never approve a QR-code login you did not initiate, and never share a password, token, one-time code, or backup code.
